Around the world, dozens of incinerators and other thermal processing technologies have been constructed to deal with the problem of municipal solid waste (MSW). With the average human generating between.7 and 1 kg of waste, per day, it is easy to see why waste disposal has become a major expense for municipalities and a major environmental hazard. In the United States, for example, only 75 waste-to-energy facilities exist and while they deal with an impressive 34 million tons of waste, annually, that represents only 13% of the total MSW generated in the US. That means the balance is going into landfills where the decomposing organic fraction of the waste stream becomes the single largest non-transportation source of greenhouse gases (GHG’s). Outside of some European countries and Japan, that same situation exists, worldwide. There is a pressing need for environmentally progressive waste management solutions in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, as well as on virtually all island nations.

What is ironic about this situation is that emissions from landfills are the largest non-transportation source of greenhouse gas emissions, in most countries, at a time when climate change is seen as one of the greatest threats facing our future. The increasing cost of raw materials has made the metal, glass, plastic and other commodities in the waste stream more valuable than ever before. Clearly, there is a huge demand for sophisticated, environmentally-progressive, waste recycling and conversion facilities. This is particularly true in those jurisdictions who derive much or all of their electricity from fossil-fuels, as electricity generated from modern WtE facilities can actually cost less than power produced from oil.
